The Sustainable Development Goals, set by the United Nations Organization (UNO), offer a new framework for development policies. This agenda is an interdisciplinary, universalist approach that aims at eradicating extreme poverty by 2030 as well as reducing high levels of inequality.
The 17 goals pose a great challenge for Latin America. To turn this vision into reality, the countries have the support of the UNDP, the UN development network, but it will be difficult for them to implement and measure the goals. In spite of the economic growth experienced by the region since the beginning of the new millennium (ECLAC, 2015), Latin America remains the region with the highest inequality in the world.
In order to achieve said goals, the countries will have to undertake a collective effort to generate and share new knowledge, do cross-sectoral work with multiple stakeholders and reach new agreements. Against this backdrop, think tanks will also play a key role in contributing to the implementation of the SDGs.
CIPPEC’s work centers around 10 of the 17 SDGs (goals 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 11, 13, 16 and 17), which mainly focus on social and economic issues. We aim to contribute by informing public debate, providing evidence, promoting reforms and monitoring the progress of the specific commitments made by Argentina to the Development Agenda. In some cases, we produce applied research, generating evidence to improve public policy decision-making. In others, we take the best international policies and provincial experiences to identify those processes that have successfully contributed to developing the best public policies. We formulate feasible, fully-costed public policy proposals. We develop specific tools for all levels of government and organize training sessions for the teams in charge of implementing sectoral policies. Furthermore, we also create expert networks and encourage public dialogue. We want to be a bridge for public officials, media, international cooperation organizations, the private sector and subject-matter experts.
The following are those core values of our agenda that are related to the SDGs.
