CIPPEC participated in various international forums, seminars and meetings throughout 2019. Here are some of the most important events.
Since its foundation twenty years ago, CIPPEC has built cooperative ties with a large number of partners including the academia, the private sector, government agencies, trade unions, other NGOs, multilateral organizations and local communities. These partnerships have taken shape at the national, regional and international level —many of which are now reflected in our national and international networks.
Since 2018, year in which CIPPEC co-chaired the Think 20 (T20), we have been implementing a new international strategy that strengthens our global vision regarding policy and content related issues, while presenting new opportunities for cooperation through regional and international networks.
T20 Japan Summit
CIPPEC participated in the T20 Japan Summit in Tokyo on May 26th and 27th. Its experts, many of whom continue to participate in the T20 process as co-chairs of the various working groups, took part in several panels together with colleagues from leading think tanks and international experts.
Those representing CIPPEC included: Julia Pomares, Executive Director; directors Alejandra Cardini, Mercedes Méndez Ribas and Martín Rapetti; coordinators Belén Abdala and Martina Farías Bouvier; coordinators José Florito and Iván Matovich; and Sonia Jalfin, member of CIPPEC‘s Advisory Council.
During the event, in addition to the panels, institutional meetings were organized to share CIPPEC’s work agenda and continue its institutional role as a member of the T20 Troika.
Latin-American Think Tanks Meeting
Julia Pomares, Executive Director, participated on Monday, September 23rd and Tuesday, September 24 of the 7th Latin American Meeting of Think Tanks, which took place in Bogotá, Colombia.
During the meeting, Pomares explained the effects of political polarization and unresolved structural problems within think tank planning and development.
Forum on the Future of Organized Multilateralism by ISPI
Julia Pomares, Executive Director, participated on Thursday, October 3 and Friday, October 4, in the Forum of the Italian Institute for International Political Studies in Milan, Italy, where she discussed how global governance will change in the coming years. During the meeting, Pomares presented The Future of Politics, a report produced by CIPPEC under the T20 process.
T20 Preparatory Workshop Saudi Arabia
Alejandra Cardini, Gabriel Lanfranchi and Leandro Serino, Director of the Education Program, Director of the Cities Program and Principal Investigator of CIPPEC’s Economic Development Program, respectively, participated in the preparatory workshop for T20 Saudi Arabia on October 13th and 14th in Riyadh, prior to the start of the country’s presidency, beginning next December and running during 2020.
Annual World Bank and IMF Meetings
Mercedes Méndez Ribas, Director of Institutional Development, participated during the week of October 14th in the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) Civil Society Programme as part of the annual meeting of the World Bank and the IMF in Washington DC. During its development, she opened the panel, “The IMF’s work on Inequality”, in which she presented how the problem of inequality is highlighted throughout CIPPEC’s entire programmatic agenda.
In addition to participating in the panel discussions and sessions of the Annual Meetings and the Civil Society Forum, she participated in an exchange space for Program fellows with the presence of World Bank and IMF executives.
On another note, Méndez Ribas met with the Ambassador of Argentina to the United States, Fernando Oris de Roa, and with representatives of the Inter-American Development Bank.
Mercosur Youth Meeting
On Wednesday, the 23rd, and Thursday, the 24th, of October, Martina Farías Bouvier and Iván Matovich, Institutional Development and Education coordinators, respectively, participated in the 2nd Mercosur Youth Meeting, organized by Nestlé in San Paulo, Brazil. The event featured exhibitors from Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. In addition, talks and discussions were held covering topics such as access to the world of work for MERCOSUR youth, the ABC of entrepreneurship, the skills necessary for the work of the future and the Swiss dual education model.
Wilson Center
Julia Pomares and Martín Rapetti, Executive Director and Director of Economic Development, respectively, participated on Wednesday, October 30, in an event of the Wilson Center’s Argentina Project, an initiative that seeks to promote a separate forum of long-term discussions based around the challenges and opportunities facing Argentina.
Panel on global economy and development
On Thursday, October 31, CIPPEC co-organized an event with the Brookings Institution’s Global Economy and Development program in Washington DC on recent trends in democracy and emerging world development. The objective of the meeting was to analyze the election results and the political and social processes that are taking place in developing countries.
In addition, the meeting aimed to show the implications of equity growth and political institutions within South Asia, Africa and Latin America. On this occasion, Julia Pomares, Executive Director of CIPPEC, addressed the electoral processes and challenges facing the Latin American region.
Southern Voice 2019 Annual Meeting
Mercedes Méndez Ribas, Director of Institutional Development, participated on Monday, November 25th and Tuesday, November 26th in the Southern Voice Steering Committee annual meeting in Lima, Peru.
The meeting also included executives from organizations that are also part of the Committee, including: the Center for Policy Dialogue (Bangladesh), Science, Technology and Innovation Policy Research Organization (Tanzania), Centre for the Study of the Economies of Africa (Nigeria), the Asociación de Investigación y Estudios Sociales (Guatemala), Center for Poverty Analysis (Sri Lanka) and the Grupo de Análisis para el Desarrollo (Perú).
Global Think Tanks Summit 2019
From December 12th to December 14th, Julia Pomares, Executive director of CIPPEC, participated in the Global Think Tank Summit, organized by Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program (University of Pennsylvania), and the Getulio Vargas Foundation, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
